the shadow of a story is there, whether or not my perspective is readily identifiable...
Raised in Westport, Oregon, in a small mill town on the Columbia River. After a four year Army enlistment,he attended Oregon State University, where he received a BFA in Fine Arts, and a BA in Graphic Design. Working as a freelance sculptor under the tutelage of Willy Whitten, of Sculpture Design Studios, I honed my craft as a sculptor and artist My goal is to create work that is visually appealing, and accessible on different levels. As a commercial sculptor I learned to create 3-D objects from flat art. This practice in turn lead to an interest in spatial arrangements on flat surfaces. Space is a moment, a cubic morsel of time. Now I carve lines and manipulate space on canvas, to tell a story, make a suggestion, plant a seed, hold a mirror. My visual style is derived from an interest in children’s books; primers, comics, and stories; all the simple visual devices we use as a culture to educate and socialize ourselves. The images in their pages always left me feeling like I should be learning something, even if I didn’t comprehend the words. Like those books, I want this work to hold the feeling the shadow of a story is there, whether or not my perspective is readily identifiable. |
